Here's a feel good stroy for all you loving cat owners out there...

A car crash, a stray kitten and two sets of loving neighbors.

That’s how the improbable story of “Moses the Cat” began, a story that has turned Moses, an orphaned and stray kitten, into an Internet sensation.

Bobbi and Mark and Meg and Clay are the two sets of neighbors who, one day in early April, heard squeals from inside the carport of Meg and Clay’s Knoxville, Tenn., home. What the couples discovered was a kitten so small they hardly knew what it was.

“He looked like a little mouse,” Mark told Goodmorningamerica.com of their 4-in., 4 oz. discovery. “None of us had ever seen a kitten that small.”

The foursome quickly realized that this kitten, whom they named Moses, was the now-orphaned kitten of a stray cat that had recently been hit by a ...   Read more...

According to the Banfield Pet Hospital State of Pet Health 2012 Report, chronic disease in dogs and cats is on the rise. Consequently, or coincidentally, cats came into focus of the prestigious Banfield Pet Industry Summit, held August 14-15 in Portland.

Dr. Jeffrey Klausner, director of medicine at Banfield started the conference by noting that cats and also dogs suffer from illnesses that can be prevented. “It’s tragic,” he said. Klausner expressed a concern about a real lack of new knowledge, because relatively few studies are being funded. “This clearly doesn’t bode well for our pets’ future.”

Cats are especially hard hit on all ends; for starters, cat veterinary visits continue to decline. Veterinarians can’t treat cats they don’t see, or find disease early, and early detection often yields better results for cats, and less dollars ...   Read more...

Courtesy of the Columbia Daily Tribune comes the following alert...

In April, Diamond Pet Foods announced a voluntary recall on three brands of pet food because of concerns the food was contaminated with salmonella. In May, two more recalls involving several brands of dry dog and cat foods were issued. The latest recall includes foods that were distributed in Missouri. Some of the recalled foods include Diamond Naturals Small Breed Lamb and Rice Formula, Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul, Canidae, Taste of the Wild and Kirkland. For a complete list of involved foods, production dates and areas of distribution, go to www.diamondpetrecall.com.

The main concern with this recall is pet owners who become ill after touching the pet food, cross-contamination of their own food with products that touched the affected pet food, or direct contact with an infected pet. According to a May 11 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, confirmed outbreak cases ...   Read more...

When it's summer time, it's usually hot.  Here is Las Vegas, it can get VERY HOT.  If you own a dog, you likely walk your dog.  Remember, when it's hot, it can mean bad things to a dog that is low to the ground already.  Consider the following option...

A Cool Collar.  There are plenty of cooling collars on the market depending on the size and needs of your dog. Part of keeping your canine cool is keeping the area around his face and ears from getting too warm. Outward Hound makes a cooling bandana that velcroes around your pet's neck.  However, it can get a bit heavy once it is fully saturated with water. If you have a smaller dog or limited budget, you can get the same effect by dampening a bandana with cold water and tying it around your dog's neck. The wet bandana can provide a cooling effect for your pet on a walk, at play or just hanging out.

It's hard to believe it, but we've been blogging online for more than year now and the Paw Minders Plus family would like to wish everyone a SAFE and Happy 4th of July!  Remember, most animals don't like fireworks.  The lights and loud sounds can scare them.  BE CAREFUL with them around your animals.  Our two little ones will be staying at home when we take in the fireworks shows around Henderson this 4th.  We love the shows, but know they don't.  Anyway, enjoy the fun that comes with the 4th and we'll return later this month with more tips and articles on animal care!  In the meantime, click the link below to check out the fireworks show at the Disney-MGM Studios in Walt Disney World, FL. Taped in 2005.
